Born of waterbending travelers, Esoka was very different from the rest of the Northern Tribe. She speaks her mind rather then to keep her ideas to herself.
At the age of 15, she tries to enroll into Master Paku's class only to be declined and told to go with the rest of the women in a healing class. Of course, this made the young waterbender angry, fueling her stubbornness. She continues to try and get in only to be kicked out over and over again.
After a few months of being humiliated over and over again by Master Paku, she packs her things and leaves the Tribe via canoe and what training she had already learned.
Soon, she arrives in Earth Kingdom territory. She meets the Kyoshi Warriors and learns how to fight without her bending, a sort of last resort. She also travels to Omashu where she got to meet a lovely couple who gave her some food and extra clothes for her journey.
After traveling alone for 2 years, she was resuming the teachings she could remember when she tried to sneak into a lesson. Standing in her canoe, she begins to calm her energy when a fireball shot her out of her small boat, sending her into the water. She gasped and looked to see who had attacked her, meeting the face of the terrifying Admiral Zhao.
The fearsome firebender orders his men to grab her, thinking she was a part of Team Avatar; and throw her in the cell below. She stayed there for a few weeks until Zhao realized he couldn't use her against the Avatar. After her 18th birthday, he decided to make her a dancing hogmonkey as entertainment for him and his crew. They would throw food or drinks at her and heckle. It wasn't a fun time.
In those three years, she learns the "Forbidden Technique" known as bloodbending after a few molerats try and steal her small snacks known as meals. By her 20th birthday, she has mastered the bending and decides to use it for the first time. Surprisingly, it was easy to escape from her jail cell and get to the dock. By then, she was exhausted and with a hop, she dives into the cold water below.
Many of the crew believed she drowned, however she survived and had washed up on a small island within the Earth Kingdom. An old woman named Yin Wi found her and brought her from the brink of death. She now lives in hiding, practicing her waterbending until she's finally mastered it.

Esoka is a recent transfer from the freezing tundra of Alaska. She is, however, barely allowed to attend the school due a subelement of her Quirk.
She doesn't have great control of her Quirk and the Principal of UA and the Heroes Association have decided to keep her under monitored quarantine with lessons to keep her on equal ground with the rest of the school.
She is allowed to go to UA once every few weeks to be trained in controlling her quirk, but she cannot speak of her confinement.
Secretly, she goes out to party. She likes to dance and the emotions that bubble up from her dances allow her to take better control of her Quirk.
